Weekly Email: May 26, 2025
Summer semester is quickly approaching, and we're also beginning the final week of the Spring 2 term. If you're anything like me, you're looking back at the past couple of months wondering where the time went! My son just finished second grade, soccer season wrapped up, and we are traveling for Memorial Day weekend. I'm always amazed by how time seems to move both slowly and quickly at the same time.
This week we're exploring the idea that you can only lead others as deep as you've gone yourself. I hope this serves as encouragement during your studies.
Student Tip: Building Ministry Depth Through Seminary Education
Last week we discussed choosing faithfulness over grades in your seminary journey. This week, I want to explore another important element: developing depth in your ministry calling.
Here's a fundamental truth: you can only lead others as deep as you've gone yourself. Seminary education is vital because it equips you to dive deeper than those you'll serve in your church and community. The rigorous training you're receiving isn't just an academic exercise but it's preparation for lifelong ministry impact.
Why Your Seminary Investment Matters
Seminary provides comprehensive context for understanding Scripture, theology, counseloring, pastoral care, and various other aspects of ministry. This foundation enables you to quickly dive deep into specific topics because you're not starting from ground zero. You'll already know how to use tools like Logos Bible software and proven study methods. When it's time to prepare that Bible study, sermon, or counseling session, you'll draw from a well-established base of knowledge and skill.
Learning How to Think, Not Just What to Think
Seminary also teaches you how think critically for approaching biblical texts, theological questions, and ministry challenges. You'll develop discernment for navigating complex issues, knowing when situations have clear biblical answers and when they require careful, nuanced thinking. This skill proves invaluable when facing the inevitable complexities of various ministry endeavors.
Embracing Necessary Growth
Not every seminary assignment or class will feel immediately relevant or exciting. This is actually part of the value. Wrestling with challenging topics you might not naturally choose stretches you in unexpected ways. It prepares you for ministry's unpredictable nature and ensures you develop well-rounded knowledge and capabilities.
You're Making a Difference
I recognize your life is demanding. Balancing work, ministry responsibilities, family obligations, and seminary coursework requires tremendous dedication. But your efforts truly matter. You may not see the fruits immedietely but trust in your God-given calling.
Every paper you research and write, every lecture you engage with, every late-night study session is shaping you into a more effective minister of the Gospel.
You're not simply earning a degree, you're building a foundation that will impact countless lives for generations.
Your faithful work today prepares you to lead others into deeper relationship with Christ and His Word. You're part of God's larger mission to equip His people for works of service.
