10 Ideas for LiveSyncs

LiveSyncs are an integral part of our online courses. You have the opportunity to connect with your students around the world. Many of our students are hungry for engagement with you. Our students choose Southern Seminary and Boyce College for you, the faculty. They seek this engagement with you, and we hear consistent feedback that the live syncs are a valuable aspect of their online experience. 


Try to think of LiveSyncs as interaction points with your students. This is the one space where you can have live interaction with your students around the globe. 


10 Ideas for LiveSyncs

  1. Utilize the first LiveSync to introduce yourself and get to know the other students.

  2. Have a conversation with a colleague, a person in ministry, or another scholar about a particular topic.

  3. Present on a topic for 15–20 minutes, then utilize breakout rooms for students to discuss. Bring students back for an entire class discussion.

  4. Review a significant assignment, such as a paper. Share with students what you’ve seen work well in the past, struggles that students may encounter, and what you expect on the assignment.

  5. Allow one of your OTAs to present/teach on a particular topic. This allows you to watch them and provide feedback on their teaching. This is especially valuable if your OTA is one of your doctoral students.

  6. Discuss one or more of the books in your class, especially if you don’t have a formal assignment tied to a particular book.

  7. Have students submit questions before the LiveSync and answer their questions. Having questions submitted before the LiveSync generally generates better questions.

  8. If your class has a major paper, ask students to share what they’re writing about, questions they have, or any issues they are encountering. Alternatively, ask the students to state their paper’s thesis, and you can provide live feedback.

  9. Give a lecture on a particular topic that you are passionate about. You could replace a lecture or two in your course with this method.

  10. Exam or quiz review. If you have an upcoming midterm or final exam, spend the time reviewing with the students.
